Use It or Lose It: Which Beauty Treatments Work and Which Don't?
15 Jul 2009
iVillage.com Jennifer Merritt July 14th 2009
Every day a new product is released that's [insert claim here] guaranteed to zap your cellulite! Erase wrinkles forever! Give you Angelina's lips without surgery! But can science really fight nature?
"Science is the study of nature," corrects Sue DeCotiis, M.D., a physician with a practice in New York. "Think of the trees shedding their autumnal leaves only to bloom again in the spring fuller than before. Understanding the biological processes involved is how science works with nature to maintain health and beauty."
To that end, we asked Dr. DeCotiis and Dr. Gabriel Chiu, a plastic surgeon in Beverly Hills, to tell us—scientifically speaking—which beauty treatments work and which products you can stop wasting your money on.

As you step through the doors at BHPS in Beverly Hills, it’s easy to imagine that you’re entering an ultra chic boutique rather than a skin rejuvenation center. The Chanel-inspired interior design created by Top Design runner-up Preston Lee features floor-to-ceiling gold beading, black and white iconic photography and low-slung comfy furniture that immediately puts every guest at ease – even the bathroom is luxuriously chic! And did we mention the French macarons, cupcakes and espressos that are on offer before your treatment even begins? There’s even a full concierge service that can arrange childcare, provides a limousine service to or from the center, or bring you lunch from nearby Beverly Hills restaurants.

As the recession began to dig its claws in last year, the NY Times ran an article on how plastic surgery was becoming a luxury that some were cutting back on. It seemed like vanity just might be yielding to practicality.
But now six months later, how are people feeling about plastic surgery? We asked Dr. Gabriel Chiu, the surgeon behind Beverly Hills Plastic Surgery, Inc to tell us what he's been seeing in his office. Beverly Hills Plastic Surgery is a full-service plastic and cosmetic surgery practice offering services that range from skincare and injectables to more invasive procedures such as breast augmentation. Their spa-like office is located on Wilshire Blvd. and has a retail skincare lounge, valet parking for medical appointments and the all-important private VIP reception.

Boutique hotel or Botox Hotspot? The just-opened Beverly Hills Plastic Surgery (9454 Wilshire Blvd., Beverly Hills, 310.888.8087) -- located on the ground floor of a medical/office building in vacated E*Trade digs --gets the super-glam treatment via Top Design runner-up Preston Lee. Floor-to-ceiling gold-beaded wall panels, low-slung coctail-lounge furniture (with just-so arrangements of macaroons, cupcakes, and homemade biscotti) and oversized black-and-white photography makes this space feel more like an intimate lobby than a bustling surgery practice...
Dr. Gabriel Chiu of Beverly Hills Plastic Surgery - A Facelift Without the Knife, Non Surgical Facial Sculpting
24 Feb 2009

L.A. Splash Magazine
Plastic surgery is a great way to take years off your looks. But, of course, there’s a downside: expense, time off to recouperate and a chance it may not turn out the way you expected. Facial sculpting without surgery is the easier route, and well, if it doesn’t turn out the way you expected, in a few months to a year, at most, it’ll wear off, and you’ll be back to square one.
