5 Ways to Tighten Your Figure

From Exercise to Liposuction: 5 Ways to Tighten Your Figure

Have you ever wished that you could have a flatter stomach and a tighter figure? Then you’re not alone. Thankfully, when it comes to wanting a tighter figure, you have lots of options available to you. Here’s a quick look at five different ways that you can get the tighter figure you’ve been dreaming of.

1. Exercise

Building muscle will tighten your figure and firm up your trouble zones, but only if you stay disciplined in your workout routine. Increasing your cardiovascular strength and adding muscle-building workouts to your weekly fitness routine can give you the results you’re looking for.

A proper exercise routine should include:

  • At least 30 minutes of aerobic activity per day—cardio helps you burn fat and tighten your body. You should choose activities that work the entire body like running, swimming, or kickboxing to burn the most calories.
  • Intervals to maximize your caloric burn—interval-training comprising a high intensity aerobic activity for 30 seconds, followed by a moderate intensity activity for one minute, will help you burn more calories in a short period of time.
  • Strength training—perform strength training exercises three or four times a week, splitting your days by working your legs and core one day, chest and triceps another, and your back and biceps on another day. Choose between six and 10 strength-training exercises each day.
  • Focus on your tummy—train your abdomen most days of the week after your aerobic activity. Mix up your exercises with bicycle twists, sit-ups, crunches, reverse crunches, planks, leg lifts, and scissor kicks.

2. Diet

Consuming proper foods will allow you to take in the nutrients your body needs to maximize muscle-building and minimize fat storage. Achieving a tight, toned body is possible by following a few simple diet tips along with regular exercise.

A few simple diet tips to help you stay slim, tight, and toned are:

  • Eat fat in moderation—dietary fat should be less than 30 percent of your total calorie intake. Some fats are healthier for you than others, so you should try to eat mainly unsaturated fats, such as avocados, nuts, and olive and canola oils.
  • Eat enough lean protein—making sure you get enough protein in your diet is essential for weight maintenance and staying lean. Try to choose lean protein sources, such as chicken, fish, skim milk, low-fat yogurt, and low-fat cottage cheese.
  • Eat high-fiber foods—eating high-fiber foods, such as fruits, vegetables, whole grain breads and cereals, legumes, nuts, and seeds, will help you stay full for longer.
  • Drink plenty of water—water is a calorie-free way to make you feel full so you don’t crave junk food.
  • Limit sugar—sugary foods will add unwanted pounds as sweets tend to be high in calories and low in nutrients.
  • Limit alcohol—alcohol tends to be metabolized in your body as fat, as it is high in calories and essentially void of other nutrients.

3. Tummy Tuck

If you find that diet and exercise just aren’t doing the trick, then you may want to consider cosmetic surgery.

Tummy tuck surgery works to flatten the abdomen by removing extra fat and skin, and by tightening muscles in your abdominal wall.

A tummy tuck is most suitable for men and women who are in good health, and is also an option for men and women who were once obese and still have excess fat deposits or loose skin around the belly.

4. CoolSculpting

CoolSculpting uses patented cooling technology to eliminate fat cells without surgery, and requires little-to-no downtime. This cooling technology precisely targets fat cells beneath the skin, and cools them to a temperature that triggers their natural death. Since fat freezes at a different temperature than normal cells, there is no damage to skin, nerves, or other surrounding tissue.

5. Liposuction

Liposuction removes stubborn fat from your body using cannulas – long hollow tubes on one end and attached to suction on the other. As stubborn fat cannot be reduced through exercise or diet, liposuction may be the essential final step in achieving a perfectly toned figure.

7 Things You Need to Know about Cosmetic Procedures

What You Should Know about Cosmetic Procedures

If you’re considering a cosmetic procedure but have not had one in the past, it’s important to know what to expect and to also have a realistic outlook on what cosmetic procedures (surgical or non-surgical) can achieve.

While we advise booking a consultation and having Dr. Gabriel Chiu take you through the specifics of your procedure, beat-by-beat, here a few things worth knowing beforehand.

1. Procedure Results Might Not be Immediate

Expecting immediate results from any procedure is unrealistic. The results of most procedures will take days or even several months before they properly manifest. So once a procedure has been completed, remember to be patient and give yourself some adequate time before the results really start to show.

2. Have Questions? We Want You to Ask Them

No matter how big or small the procedure, we encourage all of our patients to ask questions – especially if it’s your first time seeking a cosmetic solution. So if you have any general questions or deeper concerns about any procedure, make sure you ask. We want your experience to be a pleasant one with an end result of helping you achieve the look you desire.

3. You Shouldn’t Feel Self-Conscious

Sometimes people can feel self-conscious and even somewhat ashamed over the idea of seeking a cosmetic procedure, but that shouldn’t be the case. As an individual, you know what you want and how you want to look; how you get there shouldn’t matter.

There’s also the simple and unavoidable fact that certain results would be impossible to achieve without the help of cosmetic procedures. For example, stubborn fat cannot be removed via exercise or diet, so liposuction and/or CoolSculpting are two available options that can actually achieve this.

4. Men Seeking Cosmetic Procedures is More Common than You Think

While statistics show that women still receive the majority of surgical and non-surgical cosmetic procedures, more and more men are seeking cosmetic solutions, as well. So if you’re a man and have been hesitant to take the dive due to any notions of some associated stigma, there is no need to. There are plenty of men who have benefited from cosmetic procedures.

5. It’s Important to Have Realistic Expectations

Cosmetic procedures can help you address a wide range of physical imperfections or irregularities that may be bugging you, but they can’t fix everything. Any cosmetic procedure works to reflect how you feel internally – young at heart, adventurous, empowered, etc. But if you’re relying on cosmetic procedures to make you physically perfect, then you’re demanding the impossible. Remember that everyone has unique physical attributes, and you should see these as assets – not liabilities.

6. Get the Procedure for You

It’s our aim to provide every patient with the results they desire. That’s why it’s so important to us that any cosmetic procedure you have is performed because you want it. If you’re only getting a procedure because a partner, friend, or family member told you to get it, then it is not in your best interest.

7. Most Patients are Just like You

Most people who seek cosmetic procedures are just like you. They’re everyday people with jobs and family and stress who simply want to do something that will make them feel more youthful, energized, and pampered. Cosmetic surgery and non-surgical cosmetic procedures are not just for the rich and famous – this is a common but significant misconception.

Make an Appointment

When you go in for your consultation, it is very important that you make sure to talk to your doctor about any questions or concerns that you may have about the procedure. Knowing that you have an experienced doctor and that you can trust them can go a long way in making you feel comfortable about going forward with a cosmetic procedure.

Book a consultation with Dr. Chiu today so that he can talk you through everything you need to know about your cosmetic procedure of choice.

Cosmetic Procedures for Young Looking Skin

Posted in Cosmetic Surgery,Skincare

Making Your Skin Look Young Again with Cosmetic Procedures

As years go by, we all experience excessive sun exposure, which can cause premature wrinkles and skin damage. With the wonderful weather that Los Angeles can afford us all year round, spending time out in the sun is common; but that doesn’t mean you have to be stuck with skin that’s been damaged by the sun.

Here’s a quick look at some of the cosmetic procedures we offer that can help reverse years of sun damage.

Botulinum Toxin Type A

The most commonly used type of botulinum toxin type A is Botox, which is an injection used to immobilize specific muscles, preventing them from forming wrinkles and furrows. The use of Botox will also help soften existing wrinkles.

Depending on the condition that you are having treated, your Botox injections may be given in more than one area at a time. Botox injections are temporary, so you may want to get repeat injections within 3 – 4 months after your first injection.

Chemical Peels

Chemical peels are often used to reduce the appearance of sun-damaged skin, irregular pigment, and superficial scars. During the procedure, your doctor will apply a chemical solution to your skin, which makes it blister and eventually peel off, leaving new skin that is smoother and less wrinkled.

Chemical peels can be done on the face, neck, or hands, and can help:

  • Reduce fine lines under the eyes and around the mouth
  • Treat wrinkles caused by sun damage and aging
  • Improve the appearance of mild scars
  • Treat certain types of acne
  • Reduce age spots, freckles, and dark patches
  • Improve the look and feel of skin

Filler Injections

Injectable fillers work to fill lines and wrinkles with results that can last from four months to a year. Unlike Botox, filler injections fill the line, crease, or area, causing trouble spots to disappear.

Filler injections are often used to replace the body’s natural collagen that has been lost, treating wrinkles, scars, and facial lines. They can also be used to add volume by plumping and lifting cheeks, jawlines, and temples, or filing out thin lips and sagging hands.

There are many different types of injectable fillers that can be placed into different categories, including:

  • Hyaluronic acid fillers
  • Synthetic fillers
  • Collagen fillers
  • Autologous fillers

Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is a technique that uses fine powder or a tipped wand to remove the upper layers of skin. This process removes layers of dead and damaged skin cells, which allows healthy new skin to take their place.

Microdermabrasion can be used to treat:

  • Acne scars
  • Shallow scars from surgery or trauma
  • Superficial skin growths
  • Sun damage
  • Pigmentation irregularities and uneven skin tones/textures
  • Fine lines and wrinkles

Laser Skin Resurfacing

Laser skin resurfacing is a technique that directs short, concentrated pulsating beams of light at irregular skin, precisely removing skin one layer at a time. This treatment works to reduce facial wrinkles and skin irregularities, such as blemishes, acne scars, or sun-damaged skin.

There are two types of lasers most commonly used for this procedure:

  • Carbon dioxide (CO2)—uses very short pulsed light energy or continuous light beams delivered in a scanning pattern to remove thin layers of skin with minimal heat damage.
  • Erbium – YAG—is designed to remove surface-level and moderately deep lines and wrinkles on the face, hands, neck, or chest with minimal burning of the surrounding tissue.

Book a Consultation

Before considering any of the above procedures, you should first consult with an experienced doctor. Book a consultation with Dr. Gabriel Chiu today, so that he can help you make the best decision when it comes to choosing a procedure to help fix your sun-damaged skin.

Beverly Hills Plastic Surgery, Inc. offers a wide range of surgical and non-surgical options that specifically address skin irregularities, with many of the non-surgical options performed in our luxurious and relaxing Spa.

Common Myths about Liposuction

The 8 Most Common Myths about Liposuction

A lot of people have the misconception that liposuction is a fix-all body solution for your body problems, when, like any other procedure, it can and can’t do certain things for you. Here’s a quick look at the top 8 most common myths about liposuction.

1. Liposuction is a Great Way to Lose Weight

If you are trying to lose weight, then liposuction is not the procedure for you. Liposuction works to remove fat that isn’t affected by diet or exercise. You can choose to get liposuction after you’ve already lost weight, to help get rid of that stubborn fat, but the best way for you to lose weight is to change your diet and exercise routines.

2.  Liposuction Gets Rid of Cellulite

Cellulite is the fat right below the skin’s surface, that usually looks bumpy and uneven because the fat pushes through the connective tissue. While cellulite may be considered unattractive, it isn’t a health concern. Liposuction can help make cellulite less visible, but it does not outright remove it.

3. Fat Will Return Somewhere Else

While liposuction works to remove part of the fat in the targeted area, the body can still be overwhelmed by large amounts of calories that aren’t burned off. These extra calories are stored proportionately in the remaining fat cells in the body. However, fat cells aren’t distributed evenly, which means that you may gain fat in areas of the body that you aren’t used to. The targeted area will have fewer fat cells left, so those places won’t fill out in the same way that they did before liposuction.

4. You can be too Old for Liposuction

Liposuction can work on all ages, since your age isn’t a determining factor. If you have no serious health conditions and no current medications that may cause problems during the surgery, then you may be a good candidate for liposuction no matter your age. Regardless, your eligibility will be determined during a consultation with Dr. Chiu.

5. An Obese Patient is the Best Candidate

The ideal candidate for liposuction is just a little over their ideal weight. Liposuction typically won’t be performed on someone who is extremely overweight, just on people who have localized fatty deposits that don’t respond to diet or exercise. If you are too heavy for liposuction, you will be advised of how much weight you’ll need to lose or alternative procedures that may be better suited to you.

6. Liposuction is Just for Women

Liposuction is actually one of the most popular cosmetic surgeries among men. The areas that men and women seek to be treated by liposuction tend to differ, as most women want to remove fat from their thighs and hips, while men tend to focus more on the stomach area (like love handles) and even under the chin.

7. You can Return to Your Normal Routine with no Downtime

The initial recovery period after liposuction can be anywhere from two to 10 days. It is usually recommended that patients take about a week off from work. Most patients can usually return to normal activities between four to six weeks after surgery, with some swelling remaining for up to six months. You can read more about recovery times here.

8. Liposuction and Tummy Tucks are the Same

Liposuction removes fat, and a tummy tuck removes excess skin and repairs abdominal muscles. While these procedures are quite different, they are often used in tandem to create a more dramatic body transformation.

Consult with Dr. Chiu

Make sure to book a consultation with your doctor to discuss any questions or concerns that you might have about liposuction surgery. Consult with Dr. Chiu today so that he can help you decide if liposuction is the best option for you or if there are other procedures better suited to your needs.

Top 5 Benefits of CoolScuplting

Posted in CoolSculpting

The Top 5 Benefits CoolSculpting has to Offer

Have you been dieting and exercising, trying to get rid of those last few stubborn pounds? Have you thought about getting liposuction, but you just can’t seem to find the time to fit it into your busy schedule?

Then CoolSculpting might be the solution you’re looking for. Before you book an appointment with Beverly Hills Plastic Surgery, Inc. here’s a list of 5 great benefits it can offer you.

What is CoolSculpting?

CoolSculpting uses a patented cooling technology to eliminate fat cells, without surgery, and presents little-to-no downtime. Since fat freezes at a higher temperature than the surrounding tissue, CoolSculpting technology allows for fats cells beneath the skin to be specifically targeted, without causing any damage to the skin, nerves, or other surrounding tissue.

Over time, your body will naturally metabolize the treated fat cells (over the course of three to six months), leaving a more sculpted you. Unlike diet or exercise where the fat cells are reduced in size, CoolSculpting removes fat cells for good.

Top 5 Benefits

  1. Non-invasive treatment – CoolSculpting is a non-invasive procedure that can be performed on your lunchbreak because there is essentially no downtime or required recovery. This means that after your treatment is finished, you can return to your normal activities sooner than with surgical alternatives such as liposuction. Since there are no needles, incisions, or surgical equipment used during the procedure, there is minimal risk of injury or permanent side effects.
  2. Safe and effective – CoolSculpting is the only FDA-approved fat freezing technology. There’s no surgery or artificial substances involved because CoolSculpting works to freeze only the targeted fats cells, which are then shed through the body’s own natural process. The treatment is also fast, taking only around one hour to perform.
  3. Impressive, natural looking results – CoolSculpting creates natural looking results that gradually manifest. Some patients see results as early as three weeks, with significant results experienced between three to six months after the procedure. This natural progression makes it easier for your treatment to be kept a private matter, if that’s what you’d prefer. The treatment often makes patients feel and look better in a way that helps them feel happier and achieve a more positive outlook on life.
  4. Long-lasting results – With diet and exercise, fat cells can reduce in size while still remaining in the body. This means that fat cells can once again increase in size, if you stray from a healthy diet. With CoolSculpting, you’ll never have to worry about that stubborn fat coming back because, once it removes the fat cells, those targeted cells will never return. However, if you gain weight after treatment, you’ll most likely see a more even distribution of fat throughout your body, rather than in your trouble areas.
  5. It’s targeted – CoolSculpting works to target specific fat cells that don’t seem to react to diet and exercise. This means that you can target the exact area that you want to see a reduction of fat in, and that fat will melt away in as little as six months as your body naturally metabolizes it.
