Breast Implants through Transumbilical Incisions

Transumbilical breast augmentation – sometimes referred to by the acronym TUBA – is a procedure performed through an incision on the rim of the navel. A tunnel is then created under the skin, all the way to the breasts, allowing Dr. Chiu to perform your breast augmentation. This procedure is only possible using saline breast implants, which are filled after placement. Because silicone breast implants come pre-filled, they cannot be pushed into the breasts through the channel created under the skin.

This incision type is generally preferred because there are no scars anywhere near the breasts. However, this may be the only considerable advantage of this incision type.

Transumbilical breast augmentation is considered a blind procedure, as it does not allow the surgeon to visualize the creation of the pockets where the breast implants will be placed. The implants are placed using a long metal rod, which pushes them through the channel and into the breasts. They are then centered as best as possible beneath the nipples. Revision procedures cannot be performed through the TUBA method, meaning new incisions will have to be made to change, remove, or replace your breast implants. It is also unsuitable for very thin women or those with hernias or abdominal scars.

Dr. Chiu can help you select the best breast augmentation incision type based on your desired outcomes and individual anatomy. To find out which method is right for you, contact us to schedule a consultation with celebrity plastic surgeon Dr. Chiu at his Beverly Hills offices today.
