Over time, various factors like loss of skin elasticity, weight loss, and gravity can affect the overall shape and firmness of your breasts. A breast lift (mastopexy) procedure can restore shape and firmness to the breast while moving the nipple to a more youthful and attractive position. The surgery is designed to address the shape, amount of sagging, and amount of excess skin that is present.
The best candidates for this procedure are women who are in good overall health and who desire to improve the position of their breasts. Candidates should also have realistic expectations of the results and should not plan on having children in the near future as breast feeding can sometimes negatively affect the breast lift.
The Breast Lift Procedure
The breast lift surgery is performed under general anesthesia in an accredited facility and takes one to four hours to complete. To move the nipple and breast to a higher level on the chest, one of the many breast lift techniques will be used.
Crescent Lift – This is the least invasive method of all the breast lift procedures. A crescent lift is typically performed on women who have smaller breasts with minimal sagging. An incision is made above the areola where a crescent shaped piece of tissue is removed and skin is tightened.
Benelli Lift – Also known as “donut mastopexy,” this technique involves making an incision around the areola of the breast where excess skin and breast tissue are then removed.
Lollipop Lift – A lollipop lift is similar to the Benelli lift in that a circular incision is made around the areola. However, after this incision is performed, a vertical incision is made down the breast to remove skin and breast tissue.
Full Lift – Also known as the “anchor incision,” this is the most frequently used breast lift incision. An incision is made around the areola and vertically down the breast, and a curved incision is made as well on the underside of the breast. This method allows for the most removal of excess tissue for a better contoured look.
Often times a breast augmentation will be performed with a breast lift if the volume of the breasts needs to be enhanced as well. By combining these procedures, the most beneficial results are obtained.
Recovery After Breast Lift Surgery
A specialized surgical bra and bandages will be placed over the breasts to reduce swelling and maintain shape throughout the recovery process. Mild pain and discomfort are common for the first few weeks and can be alleviated by prescribed medication. Patients can resume their normal routine after two weeks but should avoid strenuous activity for about a month.
Like any surgical procedure, there is the risk of complications associated with a breast lift including: bleeding, infection, or loss of sensitivity in the nipple area.
Your New Look
Women are often satisfied with the new look of the breasts and improved position of their nipples. Individuals who get a breast augmentation with a lift also find that the breasts move have a noticeably better overall shape.
