Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty) Body
The Procedure
Tummy tuck, technically known as "abdominoplasty", is a surgical procedure that addresses the 3 components of abdominal wall deformity to create a smoother and firmer abdominal profile. The 3 components of abdominal wall deformity are: (1) loose or wrinkly skin and stretch marks, usually a result of aging, pregnancy, or significant weight loss; (2) fat tissue, commonly accumulated in the lower abdomen; and (3) muscle weakness and/or separation, which can occur as a result of pregnancy. A tummy tuck procedure will remove excess fat and skin, tighten abdominal wall muscles, and eliminate stretch marks between the belly button and pubis area. If recommended by Dr. Chiu, liposuction of the flanks, hips, and/or thighs can be performed in conjunction with an abdominoplasty for an even more dramatic result.
A mini tummy tuck is a less invasive approach with a smaller incision, best suited for those who have only a limited amount of loose skin or stretch marks in the lower abdomen, or above the pubic bone. This approach does not typically involve tightening of the abdominal muscles, and can also be combined with liposuction for a more defined result.
The Method(s)
During an abdominoplasty, the surgeon first makes an incision that extends from hip to hip along the lower pubic area. (Skilled surgeons are able to create incisions that can easily hide below a bikini bottom). The loose skin is lifted off of the abdominal wall, exposing the vertical abdominal muscles which are stitched into a new position, tightening the muscles, and thus flattening the stomach and reducing the waistline. Next, excess skin is stretched and removed. The remaining skin is re-draped over the abdominal area and sutured in place. The umbilicus (belly button), which is released from the abdominal skin flap, is finally re-attached proportionally to the new, flatter stomach area.
Ideal Candidate
Ideal candidates for abdominoplasty are those in good physical health and at a stable weight. They usually have been unsuccessful in toning their abdominal regions, even with the help of healthy diets and exercise programs. Ideal candidates are non-smokers who do not plan on future pregnancies. All patients should communicate their aesthetic goals to the surgeon in forming realistic expectations.
Surgery and Anesthesia
A tummy tuck procedure can be performed in a hospital, outpatient surgery center, or office-based surgical suite. The time in surgery for a full abdominoplasty is approximately 2 to 4 hours, depending and the quantity and complexity of work involved. General anesthesia is recommended for a full tummy tuck, though the surgery can be performed using a local anesthetic with a sedative. In the latter case, more discomfort should be expected.
Recovery
Bandages and dressings will be applied to your incision sites, and you will be wrapped with compression garments after your tummy tuck procedure. A small, thin tube will also be temporarily placed to drain any excess blood or fluids that may accumulate. You will experience swelling, minor discomfort, and sometimes the inability to stand fully upright during the first 2 weeks. Most patients require one to two weeks before returning to work and their normal activities. Although you should be able to appreciate your new slimmer profile in just a couple weeks, it may take up to 9 months before final contours are realized. Dr. Chiu and his staff will provide you with specific instructions on the care of your incision sites, appropriate post-surgical exercise, as well as prescribe the necessary oral or topical medications for pain management, expedited healing, and infection prevention.
Risks
While swelling, bruising, and discomfort are common side effects of most surgical procedures, possible risks and complications associated with abdominoplasty include: bleeding (hematoma), infection, fluid accumulation, blood clots, nerve damage, skin numbness, and deep vein thrombosis. The careful selection of a skilled surgeon can greatly reduce your chances at encountering and resolving surgical complications.
Your New Look
Most patients who undergo a tummy tuck procedure are ecstatic with their firmer, more toned midsections and improved postures. Many enjoy a new sense of self-confidence, as well as a wider selection of wardrobe options and activities! Although abdominoplasty results are considered permanent, healthy diet and regular exercise are vital to maintaining the new figure.
