Can I Get a Mammogram With Breast Implants? What Patients Need to Know

Many women with breast implants wonder whether implants interfere with breast cancer screening. The short answer is yes, you can get a mammogram with breast implants, and you should follow recommended screening guidelines just like women without implants. Annual mammography and annual screening mammography are recommended for early detection, particularly starting at age 40 for women at average risk.

Breast cancer screening plays a critical role in early detection and long-term health, even after breast augmentation. Routine mammograms help identify early signs of breast cancer, supporting early diagnosis and improving outcomes. (American Cancer Society)

Why Mammograms Still Matter After Breast Implants

A mammogram uses X-rays to create images of breast tissue and remains the most effective routine test for detecting early breast cancer. Screening mammography is the primary method for identifying cancer in its early stages, allowing for treatment when it is most effective.

Breast implants sit behind natural tissue and can slightly obscure some areas on a standard mammogram image. To address this, radiology teams obtain additional views to visualize the surrounding implant and as much breast tissue as possible. The mammography machine uses a flat surface to compress the breast and obtain clear images, which is especially important for women with implants. Women with implants typically receive four extra pictures in addition to the standard four mammogram views. (American Cancer Society)

Does Having Implants Change Breast Cancer Screening Recommendations?

No. The screening schedule does not change because of breast implants alone. Whether a woman has silicone or saline implants, she should begin routine mammograms according to age and risk factors, just as women without implants do. Assessing your risk of breast cancer is essential for determining the optimal screening schedule. Consulting your radiologist and technologist before the exam helps them tailor the imaging protocol for implant safety and visibility.

If women have additional risk factors — such as a family history of breast cancer, a genetic mutation, or prior breast conditions — doctors may recommend earlier or more frequent imaging. Some cases also call for supplemental imaging like MRI or ultrasound, especially for women with dense breast tissue. Other tests, such as additional imaging or diagnostic procedures, may be recommended if there is a higher risk of developing breast cancer. (SBI Online)

How Technologists Work Around Implants

When you arrive for your mammogram, let the technologist know you have implants. They can use a technique called implant displacement views. This method gently shifts the implant backward, allowing the technician to compress and image the more natural breast tissue anterior to the implant. The technologist will gently push the implant back against the chest wall and pull the breast tissue forward to obtain more explicit images of the breast tissue, including the front part. Technologists trained in imaging patients with implants adapt positioning to maximize tissue visibility without compromising comfort. A breast radiologist with experience interpreting images of patients with implants can help ensure accurate interpretation.

This process does not damage implants. Advanced mammography equipment applies controlled compression designed to prevent harm while capturing high-quality images.

Combine Aesthetic Goals with Long-Term Health

Breast augmentation enhances shape and confidence for many women, but it does not replace the need for routine breast health screenings. Regular mammograms remain a cornerstone of preventive care for women with implants. Early detection through screening can lead to timely breast cancer treatment and better outcomes.

If you have questions about how breast implants integrate with long-term health plans, including breast cancer screening, Dr. Gabriel Chiu and the team at Beverly Hills Plastic Surgery® can help you understand what to expect before and after augmentation.
