Chin Augmentation and Cheek Implants

Facial Implants: Cheek and Chin Augmentation

Cheek and chin augmentation are surgical procedures that insert implants to permanently enhance your facial structure. Chin augmentation increases the projection of the chin, while cheek augmentation produces a fuller and more sculpted cheek appearance. These two procedures can significantly improve your profile and facial definition to enhance your attractiveness with permanent, predictable results.
Here are some things that you should know about cheek and chin augmentation before you decide on having plastic surgery.

Cheek Implants

In general, cheek implants should take around an hour to complete, and is performed under general anesthesia. However, this can differ between patients, and your surgeon can give you a better estimate during consultation.
After your cheek augmentation, you may have some swelling and mild soreness in the cheek area. Your cheeks may also feel tight due to the increased volume. In most cases, patients are able to return to work and other normal activities a week or two after surgery. However, more intensive activities should still be avoided.

Chin Implants

Similarly to cheek implants, chin implants usually take around an hour to complete. This number can differ depending on the extent of your requested procedure and other variables, which you’ll be informed of prior to the surgery.
After your chin augmentation, you may have mild soreness, tightness, or swelling in your lower face. It is important that you talk to your doctor about specific advice on how and when to resume your usual activities (including eating solid food). Generally, any numbness in the treated area should completely resolve one to two months after surgery.

Are You a Good Candidate?

A good candidate for any facial implant is someone in good health who has reasonable expectations.
Some of the common reasons for getting facial implants include:
• You have a weak, receding chin and wish to improve the appearance of your profile by increasing the projection of your chin
• You wish to enhance the definition and fullness of your cheeks
• You wish to restore contour and proportion to your facial structure made deficient by aging
• You wish to correct facial deformities resulting from injury or congenital conditions
• You do not have allergies to implant materials

Preparing for Your Surgery

Your surgeon will provide thorough preoperative instructions, answer any questions you may have, take a detailed medical history, and perform a physical exam to determine your fitness for surgery.
In advance of your surgery, your doctor may ask you to:
• Stop smoking at least six weeks before undergoing surgery to promote better healing
• Avoid taking aspirin, certain anti-inflammatory drugs, and some herbal medications that can cause increased bleeding
The above may differ depending on personal and health-related circumstances, so make sure to ask questions and have a complete idea of what you need to do in the weeks leading up to surgery.

After Surgery Care

Depending on your medical condition after surgery, your doctor will either recommend an overnight stay or send you home to recover. Some discomfort, light bruising, and swelling are common and can be alleviated with cold packs and pain medications. Your face may feel tight and restricted. It is important to follow all dietary and activity restrictions as well as special dental hygiene instructions during your recovery.
For your recovery period at home, you should look into having a setup that includes:
• Plenty of ice
• Freezer bags
• Ointments or creams as recommended by the surgeon for any external incision site
• Clean gauze
• Soft foods, such as protein shakes, pudding, Jell-O, and ice cream
• Mouthwash (if your surgeon recommends not brushing your teeth while your face recovers)
One week to 10 days after your surgery, any stitches in your mouth should fully dissolve. You may still have limited movement when smiling and talking, but most swelling and bruising should be resolved. You may be ready to return to work at this point; however, you should only do so if explicitly stated by your surgeon.
After two weeks, you should be able to resume all normal work activities, and after one to two months, any numbness should be resolved, with the facial tissues adjusting well to the implants. This will allow for more freedom of movement. Results will be noticeable, and your facial structure will be more defined and balanced.
