Botox: How it Addresses Less Obvious Signs of Aging

Posted in Botox Treatments

What age should a person get Botox injections? In their 20s, 30s, or 60s? In the past, it was assumed that Botox was a remedy for Hollywood starlets who had passed their mid-century birthdays and wanted to rewind the clock by a couple of decades. As doctors and patients have learned more about its benefits, the age for starting routine injections now begins in the mid-to-late 20s, with more and more men and women looking to prevent their wrinkles before they have a chance to really begin.

It is now the Hollywood trend to begin addressing those less noticeable fine lines that appear when we are making normal facial expressions such as laughing, frowning, or concentrating.Botox is a non-surgical procedure, so there are no scars, no general anesthesia and no downtime. Since it is almost impossible to nothave movement in your face, Botox is the best way to combat aging.

Stop the Process

Botox works best when it is used for fine lines that haven’t quite set, meaning that they only appear when you move your facial muscles. The ingredients in Botox, which are a purified form of botulinum toxin A, relax the facial muscles by blocking the nerves that cause the muscles to contract. Without the movement of the muscles, collagen (a protein that helps with skin elasticity) will remain intact so the fine lines cannot deepen and form folds in the skin that are constantly visible.  For this reason, most physicians see Botox not only as a treatment for wrinkles but also as a preventive measure.

Ava, 37.

Most people choose to have Botox every 3-4 months since the effects are not permanent. As you continue to receive the routine injections, you will notice that your fine lines and wrinkles are not as deep or as noticeable when the Botox wears off as they were after your first treatment. Without movement, they can only get better, not worse!

Smooth Your Face

We know that Botox is used to prevent fine lines from forming, but it is also used for softening the appearance of wrinkles. Wrinkles that have set can cause a person to have a permanent “look” and also can make them appear years older. For example, have you ever seen someone who always looks like they are angry, or someone who looks like they are frowning even when they are actually smiling? These are the effects of the deep creases that form between the eyebrows and around the mouth. Receiving Botox in these areas alleviates these signs, causing the face to have a more approachable and relaxed appearance.

Men, especially, like to get injections in these areas to help with first impressions when they are interviewing for a job or going out on a first date. A constant angry scowl can quickly turn off a potential partner or possible employer. Botox can be used in multiple areas, so if you have more than one problem area, they can all be treated at the same time.

Stephen, 44.

It is common for potential Botox users to have a fear of complications like not looking natural or having “facial freezing” where they have absolutely no movement in their face. If you want to avoid the dreaded “plastic” face, make sure to use Botox in moderation and only let an expert plastic surgeon or dermatologist administer your injections. It’s extremely safe when used correctly, and your ability to express your full range of movement will remain intact.

As life happens and sleep is eluded, our face tends to take on a haggard appearance. We may only be 35, but with two kids, three dogs and a husband/wife, we feel like we are 50. Botox can help to relax the facial muscles that cause us to look way older than we are. If you are used to crinkling your forehead in concentration as you help your child with math homework, Botox will prevent this crinkling. This is a fabulous benefit of Botox, because sometimes our expressions are automatic and we make them without thinking.

On another note, Botox can do more than just smooth wrinkles. If you want to give your eyes a younger, more open look, a skilled cosmetic surgeon can inject Botox into the muscles around the eye that control the downward movement of brows, giving them a lift. This is called a Botox Brow Lift. After a few days, your face changes from looking old and tired to appearing more alert and energetic.

Angie, 50.

When you choose a plastic surgeon that has a thorough understanding of facial anatomy, as well as an artistic eye, they will be able to use Botox creatively to not only lift the brow and open the eyes, but also to rejuvenate the mouth and lips, and shape the contours of your face by tightening up the jawline. Botox injections to the face are often combined simultaneously with soft tissue fillers to provide total non-surgical rejuvenation. Botox has also been shown to help reduce the symptoms of rosacea, a skin condition that makes the skin red and swollen.

Enjoy the Benefits

While you might not see your results immediately, your new look will begin to emerge in just a few short days. After about 10-14 days, you should be able to see the full effect of your injections. While the muscles are weakened, your face will remain wrinkle-free and you will continue to look rested and full of life. Taking control of the aging process before the signs become obvious will keep people guessing your true age. Regular Botox injections will give your skin the chance to maintain its natural collagen production, which will keep your skin beautiful and resilient.

The Top Celebrity Plastic Surgery Procedures

Celebrities are regarded as experts when it comes to beauty trends and looking their best. For people who are self-conscious about their bodies, knowing that their favorite actress or actor has undergone plastic surgery gives them a boldness to pursue their “new body” dreams. If a mega-star like Jennifer Aniston feels comfortable receiving a procedure, then so can you!

Here are the top celebrity plastic surgery procedures that both male and female celebrities are known for:

A smooth, youthful face is a necessary element to every star’s success in Hollywood. Lots of celebrities start using Botox in their 20s to keep wrinkles and fine lines from forming. For those who do not start early, laugh lines, crow’s feet and wrinkles can be eliminated by injecting the Botox into problem areas. The ingredients used in Botox freezes the muscles, keeping them from moving and making more creases. Material girl, Madonna, is still rocking her youthful appearance thanks to Botox. So are Forrest Gump star Robin Wright, Baywatch’s David Hasselhoff, and American Idol creator Simon Cowell.

As you can see from the real-life before (left) and after photos (right) of Botox, the patient’s forehead wrinkles and crow’s feet are far softer/minimized.

When the skin becomes too lax and Botox is no longer effective at hiding deep wrinkles, a facelift is the next step. A facelift gives an overall rejuvenation by tightening sagging skin, reducing deep creases, and removing excess skin and fat under the chin. A facelift does not change your facial features and it cannot stop aging, but it will turn back the hands of time. Celebs like Kris Jenner and Sharon Osbourne have been able to effectively conceal their true ages by having facelifts.

Breast Augmentation

Many actresses choose to have breast implants to boost their self-esteem. Knowing that their bodies will be subjected to scrutiny on the big screen and in magazines can be stressful. Adding some fullness and lift to small breasts can make a huge difference in how women feel about themselves, giving them confidence, which correlates to how they carry themselves. Some celebs, like singer Dolly Parton, choose a more noticeable implant while others, such as Kaley Cuoco and Miley Cyrus, keep it more on the down low.

Rhinoplasty, more commonly known as a “nose job,” is a surgery that can be both aesthetically and medically beneficial. Celebrities like Jennifer Aniston have used the procedure to correct a deviated septum while Glee star Dianna Agron regained symmetry after she had broken her nose, twice. Other celebs like Ashlee Simpson, NeNe Leakes, and Cher have undergone rhinoplasty to create facial evenness and balance.

Upper and Lower Blepharoplasty

It is extremely important for celebs to look their best in all situations. You never know when a photographer is going to snap a “no-makeup” photo. The first thing people notice are the eyes. Drooping lids, dark circles and under eye bags lead to captions about partying too much and drug abuse. An upper and lower eyelid lift repositions fat deposits, tightens skin and smooths out creases. While a breast augmentation may be the most noticeable procedure, an eyelid lift may be an even more popular option for celebrities, both men and women. There have been many celebrities that are suspected to have had eyelid lifts, but a girl (or guy) has to keep the mystery.

Lip Augmentation

Luscious lips have always been in style, and celebs like Kylie Jenner, Lisa Rinna, and Teen Mom star Farrah Abraham have embraced the look. Lip augmentation involves an injection of  hyaluronic acid filler in the lips themselves and the area around the mouth. The filler adds volume, which changes the shape and structure of the lips, giving them a perpetual pucker. The most common lip augmentation products are Restylane, Restylane-L, Restylane Silk, Juvederm Ultra and Juvederm Ultra Plus.

Below are the before and after photos of a patient in her 20s who received Juvederm. The results speak for themselves.

Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers are used for more than just lip augmentation. They are mostly used as an alternative to Botox to rid the face of unsightly facial creases and wrinkles, to enhance shallow contours, and to improve the appearance of recessed scars. Fillers can be used to add volume to the cheeks, jawlines and temples to give the face a plump and youthful appearance. Dermal fillers are temporary and have to be redone about every four months and the procedure lasts for 30 minutes. Madonna and Christie Brinkley have beautiful, plump cheeks that keep them from looking their age.

Neck Lift

Second to the face, a sagging neck reveals the signs of aging before most other body parts. Loose skin and excess fat around the neck gives the appearance of an unsightly “turkey neck.” A lift will smooth and stretch the skin so your neck is elegant and graceful. Neck lifts are usually performed in combination with other facial procedures to give an overall renewal to the face, neck, and the surrounding skin. Kris Jenner added a neck lift to her facelift to not only make her look younger, but also slimmer, making her appear as if she had lost weight in addition to her facelift.

Body Contouring

There are many procedures that fall under body contouring. The most popular are abdominoplasty, also known as a tummy tuck; liposuction; thigh lift; and arm lift. These procedures smooth out the bumps and lumps that make clothes ill-fitting and keep many people from donning a bikini.

Many celebrities who have children find out that after pregnancy, they cannot get back their slender bodies, no matter how much they diet and exercise. Body contouring surgery can smooth out the stomach, repair stretched muscles, and remove stubborn excess fat around the love handles. Mom celebrities Patricia Heaton and Sharon Osbourne have both regained their pre-pregnancy bodies with body contouring surgery.

Butt Augmentation

Lots of celebrities love the hour glass figure made popular by actresses like Marilynn Monroe. This requires substantial breasts and a booty to go along with them. Buttock augmentation can be done using implants or a Brazilian Butt Lift, which involves liposuction to contour the surrounding areas and fat transfer to the buttocks for enhancement and shape. This creates a lifted, round and firm butt that looks amazing in red carpet dresses or everyday jeans. Heidi Montag is one celeb who is proud of her enhanced bottom.

Botox for Sagging Neck and Face Skin

How Botox Can Tighten the Skin around Your Face and Neck

As we get older, sagging skin becomes more and more of a problem. If this starts occurring around your neck and face, the results can become incredibly obvious. Fortunately, there are ways to treat it so you no longer have to worry about the nagging and stressful effects of aging.

While a facelift can be very effective for certain people, many others may want a simpler option; for these people, Botox could be the best answer.

Eligible Candidates for Botox

Though the FDA has approved Botox for people from ages 18 to 65, it is important to note that a variety of other factors may prevent you from having a Botox procedure:

  • Allergies to any of Botox’s ingredients.
  • Allergies to other botulinum toxin brands (e.g. Myobloc, Xeomin, or Dysport), or experiencing side effects from these products in the past.
  • A skin infection or other skin condition in the affected area.
  • You have a disease that affects the muscles or nerves.
  • Breathing problems like asthma.
  • You have difficulties swallowing.
  • Bleeding issues.
  • You are going to have surgery soon.
  • You have had facial surgery in the past.
  • Weakness in your forehead muscles.
  • You have drooping eyelids.
  • You are taking (or have recently taken) certain medications, vitamins, or supplements.
  • You are pregnant or you are currently breastfeeding.

If you are looking into facial Botox, keep in mind that it does not treat facial lines that occur when your face is completely relaxed. In such cases, dermal fillers are a better choice: Botox can only soften the lines, but not necessarily get rid of them.

Botox for the Face

Wrinkles in the skin usually form perpendicular to the contracting muscle directly beneath it. For example, the forehead muscle is vertical. When it contracts (like when you raise your eyebrows), the lines or wrinkles formed will be horizontal. In a similar way, the two muscles where frown lines occur are slightly horizontal between the eyebrows – so when these muscles contract, frown lines will appear in a vertical alignment.

When Botox is injected into the related muscles, nerve impulses to those tissues are blocked. This reduces muscle activity in that area, reducing frown lines and producing a much smoother appearance in the skin. In short, once the contracting muscle is blocked off from nerve impulses, the skin has a much harder time forming wrinkles.

After a few days, you should see notable improvements in your appearance. Botox requires at least two to four days to attach to the necessary nerve endings; and after another 10 – 14 days, you should see the maximum results of the Botox. After this period, the results you see will be the effect of the Botox.

Botox for the Neck

Botox on the neck is great for the platysma muscle, which is found at the front of the neck and under the chin. As the skin in this area ages, neck bands begin to form, creating a look which many like to call turkey neck. A Botox treatment in this muscle will help make the neck bands that form around this muscle less prominent, relaxing the area and softening neck bands.

The masseter muscle, which is one of the active muscles used for chewing, can oftentimes relax and soften, creating a square, muscular jawline. Applying Botox can effectively contour this area, according to your needs. If you have a square jawline, Botox can make the sharp angles in your jaw more subtle.

Another option is the so-called “Nefertiti Lift.” In this procedure, Botox is injected into the neck bands at the front of the neck (the platysma muscle), as well as the side bands that form around the jaw. These side bands are what cause the lower portion of skin on the face and jowls to sag: by injecting Botox into them, the jowls and lower portion of the face are lifted, streamlining the neck while lifting the sagging portion of the lower face.

As with facial Botox, expect to see the final results after a period of about two weeks.

Get Botox Treatment from a Surgeon You Can Trust

How Can Botox Treat Chronic Migraines?

Posted in Botox Treatments

Botox: An Effective Treatment for Migraines

It seems crazy: after all, Botox has essentially become synonymous with cosmetic procedures in the public eye. But in more recent years, the use of Botox has expHoe anded to become a migraine solution, with approval from the FDA. In fact, one E! Online writer wrote about how Botox treatment helped with her chronic problem just last year. If you or someone you know has had problems with migraines, Botox may just be the solution.

What Migraines Do

Chronic migraines are a neurological condition affecting 3.2 million Americans. A migraine headache is defined by an intense, painful headache that can cause nausea; vomiting; sensitivity to sounds, smells, and light; and vision changes. The condition becomes chronic when these symptoms last for 15 days or more every month.

Unfortunately, researchers have not discovered definitively what the root cause of a migraine is. They do know a handful of possible causes:

  • A central nervous system disorder may cause a migraine episode when the disorder is triggered.
  • An irregularity in the brain’s blood vessel system.
  • If your family has a history of migraines, your risk for migraines increases.
  • There are a number of brain chemicals and nerves that become active when a migraine occurs. If there is an abnormality with any of these, a migraine may occur.

There are a number of common triggers as well, including salty foods, skipping meals, alcoholic or caffeinated drinks, sensory stimulation, stress, weather changes, and more.

How Botox Helps Reduce Migraine Symptoms

Of course, Botox would make little sense as a treatment option if it was meant to treat migraines as they occurred. Instead, Botox works as a preventative measure. According to the Botox website, it is administered every 12 weeks in order to get the full benefits of the treatment. They estimate that Botox will prevent an average of 8 – 9 headache days a month.

During the procedure, Botox is injected a total of 31 times in key areas: the forehead, head, neck, back, and shoulders. Each injection is comparable to a tiny pin prick, and the whole procedure will total only about 15 minutes.

But why does it work? Botox is also known as Botulinum Toxin Type A, which disrupts the signal transmission from nerve cells to muscles. This is accomplished through muscle fiber paralysis, which effectively blocks the release of acetylcholine (a neurotransmitter) sent from nerve cells.

Ultimately, researchers are not entirely sure why it works. It is possible that the muscle paralysis is the main cause, but it could also be a result of other biological effects, such as a decrease in inflammatory mediator release.

Researchers may not be certain of the how or why, but the results have spoken for themselves. Botox was approved based on the findings of two studies: PREEMPT 1 and PREEMPT 2. These studies showed that Botox was significantly superior to a placebo, reducing the frequency and severity of headaches significantly. Participants in the study also demonstrated a significant decrease in disability and improved functioning compared with the placebo group. There were very few adverse effects and it was safe to use.

Is Botox Treatment Right for You?

Whether Botox will be effective for treating your migraine problems varies greatly depending on the individual. For one, Botox is not for everyone; people with asthma, bleeding issues, allergies, skin infections, and other conditions will not be able to receive Botox.

Others may be among the few who experience side effects like neck pain, weakness, double vision, blurred vision, drooping eyelids, loss of bladder control, hoarseness, and headaches. In worse cases, the effects of the botulinum toxin may spread to other areas of the body, causing symptoms similar to botulism. Symptoms of this condition include swallowing and breathing problems, though there are no confirmed cases of these side effects when the recommended dosage is used.

A Cosmetic Surgeon

Unfortunately, not every Botox provider can be trusted to administer the proper amount of Botox. As you can see from our website, Dr. Gabriel Chiu and his team are experts in Botox injections and other cosmetic procedures. Give Beverly Hills Plastic Surgery, Inc. a call to schedule a consultation with Dr. Chiu and discuss whether Botox might be the solution for your migraine problems.

Types of Injectables and How to Prepare and Recover

Botulinum Toxin

Botulinum Toxin, also known as Botox, is a cosmetic injection that blocks the nerve signals that cause muscles to contract. As a result, fine lines and wrinkles are relaxed and minimized – most commonly in areas between the brows, crow’s feet around the eyes and forehead creases.

What are the Benefits of Botulinum Toxin?

Here is a list of both cosmetic and medical benefits that botulinum toxin can help treat:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Facial asymmetry
  • Muscle spasticity
  • Eyelid spasms
  • Hyperhidrosis or excessive sweating
  • Crossed or lazy eyes

Depending on your age, skin condition and habits, these results will last anywhere from three to six months.

How is Botulinum Toxin Administered?

Botulinum toxin injections are administered as follows:

  • The injection site is cleansed and usually does not require anesthesia prior to injection
  • A number of injections may be needed to achieve the desired result – depending on your specific concern and condition
  • Slight pain, short-lasting swelling and minimal redness and bleeding will likely occur as a result of your procedure

How do I Prepare for a Botulinum Toxin Procedure?

Botulinum toxin is generally a low risk procedure and does not require intensive screening. To prepare for a botulinum toxin injection, here are a few action items:

  • Disclose a full medical history and any medications you are currently taking to your plastic surgeon
  • Stay well hydrated before and after treatment for safe recovery
  • Stop smoking at least six weeks before your procedure (this may vary depending on your plastic surgeon’s recommendation)

Additional information to provide your plastic surgeon’s office include:

  • You have had botulinum toxin injections in the past
  • You are using NSAIDs such as aspirin, ibuprofen, anticoagulants or blood thinners
  • You are taking muscle relaxants, allergy or sleeping medication

Aftercare and Recovery

After your botulinum toxin injection, you can return to your regular activities immediately. Strenuous activity, however, is discouraged for the remainder of the day. Redness and swelling may occur at the time of the injection but usually resolves quickly. Any bruising that may occur will usually resolve within a week or two.

To help expedite recovery and maintain results:

  • Avoid massaging the injected area afterwards – doing so may inadvertently cause the botulinum toxin to spread to an unintended area
  • Lying down or inverting the body after injection can cause complications
  • Consult your plastic surgeon’s office before taking painkillers or medication

Fillers, also known as dermal fillers or soft tissue fillers, are minimally invasive aesthetic medicine used to add volume, alter the contours of the face and fill in wrinkles. It is commonly used to achieve fuller, smoother and more youthful appearance in the face, neck and hands.

What are the Benefits of Fillers?

Here is a list of both cosmetic and medical benefits that fillers can help treat:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles around your mouth, eyes or forehead
  • Cheeks, jaw line or lip volume enhancements
  • Scars and depressions in the skin

How are Fillers Administered?

Fillers are administered with a syringe and applied to various areas on the face and head, including areas around the eyes, along the jaw, around the lips and in the head. The number, location and depth of the injections depend on the type of dermal fillers used and the desired results.

How do I Prepare for a Fillers Procedure?

In the weeks leading up to your treatment, your plastic surgeon will provide you thorough instructions to best prepare and answer any questions you may have. Below are a few recommendations:

  • Disclose a full medical history and any medications you are currently taking to your plastic surgeon
  • Refrain from taking aspirin, ibuprofen, vitamin E and any other medication that could cause bruising
  • Stop smoking at least six weeks before your procedure (this may vary depending on your plastic surgeon’s recommendation)
  • Stay well hydrated before and after treatment for safe recovery

Aftercare and Recovery

After your treatment, you will likely see the results immediately. Post-injection, you may experience swelling or minimal bruising in the area of the injection site. To resolve this, your physician may give an ice pack or col compress to decrease swelling. This should resolve itself within one week to ten days, but recovery time will largely depend on the type of soft tissue filler you received.

Fat Transfer

Fat transfer, also known as fat grafting or fat injection, is a procedure that transfers the patient’s excess fat and injects it into areas that may be lacking in volume, such as your face, hands, breasts or buttocks. This procedure not only produces natural-looking results, it is also safe, long-lasting and well-tolerated.

What are the Benefits of Fat Transfer?

The best candidate for a fat transfer is a patient seeking to augment or fill in volume-deficient areas.

Here is a list of both cosmetic and medical benefits that fat transfer can help treat:

  • Facial creases and depressions
  • Breast augmentation and enhancement
  • Buttock augmentation
  • Improve body contour, fill bodily depressions and rejuvenate your hands and face

How is Fat Transfer Administered?

Fat transfer procedure encompasses three stages: (1) harvesting, (2) purification and (3) placement.

Your plastic surgeon and you will select a site for fat removal (usually outer thighs, stomach, or lower back) and inject it with a local anesthetic. A small incision is then created for fat removal using a sterile technique inserting a cannula connected to a syringe to carefully extract fat. This process is also known as liposuction.

The fat extracted from harvesting is processed to prepare the fat cells for transfer to small syringes that will be used for placement. This process, known as purification, may use a centrifuge to spin the fat or a filtration process to remove impurities.

The area of transfer will be prepared for fat injection. Your plastic surgeon will insert a needle or cannula into the incision point of the augmented site. During this process, the needle or cannula is withdrawn in and out a few times to transfer and deposit the purified fatty tissues carefully in natural tissue planes. This process is repeated until desired results are achieved.

How do I Prepare for a Fat Transfer?

Your plastic surgeon will provide thorough instructions to help you best prepare for the procedure. Below are a few recommendations:

  • Disclose a full medical history and any medications you are currently taking to your plastic surgeon
  • Perform a physical exam to determine your fitness for this procedure
  • Pre-procedure photos may be taken
  • Refrain from taking aspirin, ibuprofen, vitamin E and any other medication that could cause bruising
  • Stop smoking at least six weeks before your procedure (this may vary depending on your plastic surgeon’s recommendation)
  • Stay well hydrated before and after treatment for safe recovery
  • Arrange for someone to drive you home after surgery. This individual or another point of contact should stay with you for at least twenty-four hours post-procedure

Aftercare and Recovery

After the fat transfer procedure, consult with your doctor on how long it will be before you can return to your normal activities, including work. Post-operative instructions also include:

  • Normal symptoms you will experience
  • Any potential signs of complications

You may experience swelling and bruising during the first week. Bruising should resolve within the second week, with slight swelling remaining. Expect to take seven to ten days or two weeks from normal activities and returning to work. By the third week, swelling will have reduced and careful, light application of makeup may be used to camouflage any residual swelling and bruising.
