Neck Lift

As we age, the neck naturally begins to sag and accumulate fat deposits. Additional factors such as gravity, weight fluctuations, and sun exposure can worsen these effects and even diminish a person’s self-confidence. A neck lift (platysmaplasty) is designed to give patients a more youthful neck while improving the contour of the jawline by tightening loose neck muscles and eliminating sagging skin. In some cases, solely liposuction may be performed to remove fat deposits from the neck if only a minimal amount of sagging is present. However, if significant excess skin exists, it should be excised in order to provide optimal results.

Ideal Candidates

Candidates for neck lift surgery should be in good physical health and have realistic expectations about the outcome of the procedure. During a consultation, Dr. Chiu can help to decide if you are a good candidate for neck lift surgery.

The Procedure

A neck lift is usually performed under sedation or general anesthesia. The procedure takes from one to a few hours to perform, depending on the extent of surgery needed, and it is done on an outpatient basis. Dr. Chiu will make a small incision underneath the chin, where a very thin cannula is inserted to remove fat via liposuction. After the desired amount of fat is removed, incisions are inconspicuously made behind the ears so the neck muscles can be tightened. The skin is lifted to a more youthful position, and any excess skin that is apparent will be excised. A neck lift may be combined with a facelift procedure to attain total facial rejuvenation, or platysmaplasty to further enhance the contours of the neck.

Recovery

Patients may experience some swelling and bruising after the neck lift procedure is complete. These symptoms will subside in about a week, and prescribed pain medication will help alleviate discomfort. Keeping the head elevated and applying cold packs for the first couple of days is also essential to a safe and speedy recovery. Patients can usually return to work after about two weeks but should avoid strenuous activities and exercise for four to six weeks.

Risks

Every type of surgery presents the risk of complications, and neck lift surgery is no different. The risks associated with neck lift surgery include: skin tightness, infection, and nerve damage. Following Dr. Chiu’s postoperative care instructions will greatly reduce the possibility of developing complications.

Results

Patients are often very pleased with the outcome of their neck lift procedure. The neck will have a more attractive contour and be in better harmony with the rest of the face. Improvements are expected to be long-lasting, and patients often experience a boost in confidence knowing that their neck looks more youthful and attractive. Dr. Chiu is experienced in this procedure and regularly combines the neck lift procedure with facelift surgery in order to give patients total facial rejuvenation.
